CGC Certification / Therapy Dog Training
We recommend taking a basic obedience class prior to the CGC/Therapy class.
CGC (Canine Good Citizen) / Therapy Dog Training
The Canine Good Citizen Program is a program that stresses responsible pet ownership for owners and basic good manners for dogs. All dogs who pass the 10-step CGC test may receive a certificate from the American Kennel Club.
This class is a must for all families who would like to expose their dogs to model citizen behaviors. This training may be for you even when you may not have the time to do therapy work but would like your dog to be the best he can be in any public setting. Club-Doggie Canine Good Citizen Training class is a big step towards your dog becoming the reliable companion in and away from home.
What you and your dog will learn in the Canine Good Citizen program:
Many dog owners choose Canine Good Citizen training as the first step in training their dogs. The Canine Good Citizen Program lays the foundation for other AKC activities such as obedience, agility, tracking, and performance events. As you work with your dog to teach the CGC skills, you'll discover the many benefits and joys of training your dog. Training will enhance the bond between you and your dog. Dogs who have a solid obedience education are a joy to live with-they respond well to household routines, have good manners in the presence of people and other dogs, and they fully enjoy the company of the owner who took the time to provide training, intellectual stimulation, and a high quality life.
To continue with Therapy training your dog will learn how to calmly accept restraint and clumsy petting. We will also spend time introducing dogs to unexpected human behaviors such as crowding and loudness. Another very important aspect of Therapy work wether you are going for an AAA or AAT is self control and the ability to not go for any item dropped or placed on the ground. We will strive for predictable and consistent behavior.
Therapy dogs can be of any breed or size. The most important factors in identifying a future therapy dog are that the dog must have an exceptional temperament, be outgoing and friendly to all people; men, women, and children. The dog should be tolerant of other dogs (of both genders) and be non-aggressive toward other pets. Therapy dogs will be touched by many different people who are initially strangers. Your dog must be accepting of strangers and love social interaction.
*Important: If you received instruction from another dog training facility or have trained at home, you will need to set up an appointment for a FREE evaluation to determine which level of training is most appropriate for your dog at Club-Doggie.
